What is Your Competition Unwilling to Do?

I was thinking the other day about my childhood summer fun activities and my thoughts reminded me about a marketing and business lesson I learned as a youth.  Of course I had no idea at that time that what I was learning would come in handy later in life.

I’d like to share this money making strategy. It could be a real breakthrough for some marketers who may be struggling in some way.

When you learn the secret, almost all of you will dismiss it as in “I don’t want to do that.” And that, my friends, is exactly why this method is so powerful!

To some, of course, this secret strategy may seem pretty obvious. Others won’t have ever considered doing this so it may be just the thing that “clicks” with you and gets your Internet business off dead center.

What’s the underlying reason this idea works so well? It differentiates your business from every other competitor’s business in your niche.

You see, when your business is unique and one-of-a-kind there is no direct competition for you to deal with. You can set whatever price you want for your products and as long as your audience is accepting, you will fight no pricing wars, comparison shopping battles, or “who has the best bonus offer” debates.

When you are unique, your advertising becomes much easier and you can focus all your effort on providing what your customers want as opposed to spending all your time telling prospects why your product is superior to competing products X, Y and Z.

I learned the strategy when I was 13, although at the time, the phrase “Internet marketing” had never been uttered by anyone – ever!

I was a Boy Scout enjoying a week-long summer camp high in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. Around the campfire one night, our troop leaders decided a fun activity for the boys would be to hold a fishing contest the next day.

The rules were simple . . . whichever scout caught the largest trout the following day would win a “work free” pass for the remainder of the camp. That prize was a valuable and coveted gift! The winner would not have to wash dishes, bury garbage, or clean latrines for the rest of camp! Every scout was eager and stoked to be the grand prize winner!

I decided the prize was going to be mine and I would do whatever it took to win, including fishing for 24 hours and missing all meals if necessary. I began preparing for this quest that very night by gathering my tackle and gear and making sure I had everything I needed ready to go before the crack of dawn.

I knew a few others, at least, would be up early just like me when the fish are biting best, so my plans for an advantage over the other scouts had to go beyond that one idea.

A couple of other times when I had fished during camp I noticed that there were more trout rising and most likely larger trout lurking across the river, on the opposite side of the camp. (I didn’t know why at the time, but it makes sense to me now that all the fish taking up residence on the “camp side” of the river were continually harassed and spooked by all the scouts fishing, wading, and throwing rocks on the river bank nearest to camp.)

Now the river was pretty wide and it ran faster and deeper in the mid main current. We had been prohibited from swimming out in that main current and there was no way I could wade across the river to get to what I thought would be the best fishing.

So I decided to do what I thought most others wouldn’t. My plan was to hike down the river bank about two miles to the road we came in on, cross the river at the bridge, and hike back another two miles so that I could fish the other side of the river opposite camp (where, I’m guessing, all the fish had been planted for the scouts).

I did just that early the next morning before daybreak. The four mile trip (one way) took twice as long as I had anticipated. Climbing over car-sized boulders, deadfalls, and other obstacles with only the beam of a dim flashlight proved a horrendous task but I did eventually get to the spot I wanted to fish across from camp.

Catching my limit of trout twice as long as any I had seen other scouts land during camp was really not that difficult. I was fishing in the honey hole!

I couldn’t help by feel satisfied and proud as my troop mates fishing from across the river kept yelling things like “cheater” and “that’s not fair” as I caught and released fish after fish.

The return hike, though exactly the same route as the early morning trek, was especially fun. I couldn’t wait to see the faces of my buddies when I would present my largest fish, a fat 20-inch rainbow trout, as my contest entry among all the 9- to 11-inch fish that we had been catching during the week.

I didn’t get back to camp until mid afternoon, but I knew the grand prize was mine and I spent the rest of the day giving my tips and pointers to all the boys that would listen who envied my fish catching abilities.

So, you might ask, what is this great Internet marketing secret that I learned as a 13 year old Boy Scout?

It was simply this . . . if you want to win the grand prize, figure out what the competition is unwilling to do that your customers want, then do it for them.  Go the extra mile.  Get up early and stay late if that’s what it takes.  Differentiate.  Stand out.

You will have no competition. You will have a unique business. You will provide something your customers can’t get anywhere else. Your competitors haven’t figured out how to get “it” for their customers (or maybe a competitor did figure out what the niche wanted but was unwilling or unable to do the work to satisfy the audience).

This simple and 100% effective strategy is available to anyone at any time. Yes, it often requires work, even additional work beyond what any competitor has ever done before.

Sometimes, the strategy works simply because you apply some extra brain power to finding solutions that no one else has ever thought of. But very, very few marketers will ever apply this strategy . . . and that is exactly why it works so incredibly well!

At the end of the day, you want your business to be the only logical choice in your niche!

To your online business success!
