Business in General
If You’re Struggling . . . Consider This
Important decisions like defining your niche, positioning your business, choosing a business model and platform, and deciding on products and services to offer can stand in the way of the business owner moving forward with his/her income goals. At times, it seems, online business creation and execution is just to complicated and frustrating.
Consider this – you may not have the skills, talent, and knowledge necessary given what you’re trying to do.
Let me give you a ridiculous example so you’ll understand what I mean.
I have my heart set on being a professional basketball player. I want to win an NBA championship ring, the MVP trophy, and jam with the best of them like LeBron and Kobe. I want it all. I have passion, focus, desire, commitment, and the will to never quit before I reach my goal. I want to be the greatest that’s ever been!
Great, right? Everyone keeps telling me I can become whatever I want to be.
Here’s the problem . . .
I am not athletically talented. I can’t dribble, I can’t shoot, I can’t dunk and I’m under six feet tall. “Oh, never mind all that” you say, “if you work hard enough at it and never give up, you can accomplish absolutely anything!”
Crazy example, I realize, but my point is simply that I don’t have the talent-skills-gift or whatever you want to call it that it’s going to take to be a success on the path I’ve chosen. No amount of study, learning, or hard work is going to get me to my goal.
Said another way, I’ve set the bar too high given the path to success I’ve chosen. Maybe you’re doing the same thing in your chosen Internet business or marketing approach.
You want to be a best selling author on Kindle – that’s the path to success and a lucrative career that you’ve set as your big goal. The problem is . . . you’re not a good writer. You don’t have the talent to be a best selling author and no amount of study, practice, or effort is going to give you the talent it takes. You have limitations that will keep you from your goal but you have paid no attention to them.
Maybe you want to be a well paid graphic designer. You have dreams that suggest you can do it if only you will study, learn, and apply yourself rigorously so you’ll make a full time living once you’re prepared.
Is such a goal realistic? Possibly … given adequate preparation, training, skill development, and the right talent.
But here’s the big problem … you don’t have any concept of what makes great design, you have no education, preparation, or experience in the field, and you lack artistic creativity.
Could it be possible that with a lot of work and study and the right amount of practice you can gain the skills you need? Maybe.
But I would ask … are you coming online to get a full university level training so that you can have a new professional career starting five to seven years down the road? Or are you here to start a business to make some money as soon as you can?
You want to be a high priced IM business coach with a stable full of wealthy clients hanging on your every word. Again, the problem is … you can’t teach or even relate to people well. You have no talent, patience, empathy, or ability to convey your thoughts. You have no previous education, training, or experience in the niche you’ve chosen.
Here’s the obvious (I hope) point of what I’m trying to convey. Sometimes we struggle mightily because we are trying to make a career in a field that requires talent or skill that not everyone possesses. Focus, study, practice, and effort can possibly take you where you want to be … but there are no guarantees … and all that effort over time (which is very precious) may not end up giving you the skills and talent that you will need to reach your goal.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am a staunch believer that seemingly average people can create a profitable business online. But none of us have enough time, patience, and persistence to chase total personal transformation and start a new business that depends upon it right now. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with seeking major personal development changes. Just don’t depend upon them as the core of your new business that you are creating right now.
Everyone has a gift or talent for something. Find out what yours might be. Ask others close to you – family members and friends that know you well – what they see in you that they would call a “talent” you have. Ask them what they think you know or do very well – better than most other people. Surely there is some subject where you excel. The key is to ponder that subject, do some thoughtful market research, and seek to find out how you might turn your advantage into a solution to demand in that marketplace.
If you’re not successful in IM, do a little self analysis and see if you’re “barking up the wrong tree” so to speak. Sometimes the difference between failure and success is as simple as focusing on things that you already do well. Focus on your strengths, your experience, your past education and training, or your hobbies, your passions, or just certain things that you do very well. Chances are pretty good that if you do something better than others right now, you have the core understanding and experience necessary to help and guide others in that same subject.
Rather than start from scratch in defining the subject (topic) of their envisioned business, smart entrepreneurs play to their strengths, to skills and the knowledge they already possess and make that the springboard to a new online business career. Being an authority or expert going in to your chosen niche is a huge advantage in solo online business.
To your online business success!
