How Much is Yesterday’s Knowledge Worth to Your Business?

I have often made the comment, “You are the business.”

As a small business owner, you are the solo creator, founder, operator, and employee of your business.

Without you, and everything that you know, do, and are, your business is nothing.

There is no business if you don’t make it so.

I am a proponent of the solo small business strategy because I believe in digital information business as the “perfect” strategy for this day and age, especially for those that want to control every aspect of their life in the business world and beyond.

I preach creating a business built upon and around the knowledge, skills, education, training, and passion that you have.

But I must tell you . . .

You can’t rest on your laurels.

You can assume that what you have learned and gathered over your lifetime of education and experience, however long it has been, has in some ways become obsolete, out of fashion, and been replaced with new information.

Change is the nature of the world we live in.

Very little stays as it was years ago – especially online where constant upheaval and new technologies and innovations thrive.

Now, you don’t want to simply toss out what you already know.  Some types of knowledge remain solid and timely.

You use it to add to the wisdom, understanding, and perspective that it gives you.

You compare the information and knowledge of yesterday with the new information that is available right now to form opinions and ideas that are made so much greater and more relevant because you have the ability to compare it and judge it against what you already know.

Information, by itself, is really only of marginal value. Information in this age of easy digital access is pretty much accessible by anyone that goes after it.

In fact, many millionaire business owners have made their fortunes by simply gathering, reviewing, analyzing, organizing and aggregating information that anyone can find online!  Sometimes, the information by itself is widely known.  It’s the fact that someone puts in the effort and time to gather, organize in a meaningful way, and present that information in a helpful format that makes all the difference.

The Internet’s greatest appeal is also it’s greatest challenge:  there is so much information available that it’s often hard to find exactly what you want or determine if what you have found is really accurate or if there is better information somewhere else.

Knowledge and wisdom, gained over time through perspective and experience, is invaluable. That is what I hope you are basing your solo small business on.

Yesterday’s information in some fields and subjects quickly becomes obsolete.  It’s why some products may have been outstanding two years ago . . . but today that same information is not worth paying for because it has been replaced by better information.

Today’s information is accessible by anyone – you just have to be good at searching and discovery.  You have to know where to find it.

The combination of the two coupled with wisdom, perspective, and experience and shared with passion . . . that’s a powerful formula for a winning solo business in most any niche!

Become a student of your niche.  Learn how to do research.  Know where to find the best information related to your business.

Learn all you can about your market subject, especially if you believe there is nothing else out there to know!
