Common Business Owner Traits

Do all successful online business owners have common sets of personal character traits or skills?  Does it take a certain type of individual to grow a business into full time personal income?  And maybe most importantly, what are those traits and how can I get them?

One of the “identifiers” that business authors often mention when talking about the personality traits usually found in successful entrepreneurs is the fact that the business owner has a keen ability to focus on the tasks at hand.

Typically, owners get a lot accomplished in a day and are known for not wasting time and energy on things that aren’t related to executing the tasks that they have laid out for themselves and others in their business.

Staying focused, especially when problems and challenges arise, is a key element in any business owners mind set.

Here are several other personality traits that successful business men and women exhibit.

Successful business owners understand the value of feedback and customer interaction.  They know that their own thoughts and desires and preferences are not necessarily the same as their target market.  They welcome feedback and suggestions about all aspects of their online business.

They very often are eager students of the processes and practices that they see as being potentially profitable in their own business.  Many continue to read and study and learn despite understanding their own business process and positioning like no one else.

They hunger for knowledge and are like sponges ready to soak up the next possible tactic or strategy that they feel could benefit their marketing.  Of course, not everything “takes” or works successfully in a business.  That doesn’t matter, though, because successful business owners know that every failure teaches them what not to do next time.

In addition, most successful business owners seem to have a never-ending supply of energy for the job. Despite what some would like to believe about quick online riches, these folks often work way beyond forty hours a week to get their agendas accomplished in full.  The beauty of setting up business systems is that once the initial work has been done, often the time needed to maintain that system is minimal.  Monitoring “well oiled and running” business systems often takes very little effort on the part of the owner.

Related to having an abundance of energy, these business owners are, at the same time, patient and prepared to stay at their tasks for extended periods if that’s what’s called for to get something finished.  Special promotions and new product launches are examples of the types of business events that often require extended working hours for owners.

The business owners may not always be patient with people, but they seem to be very patient in realizing profits and building systems that may not begin to show promise for, sometimes, months to come.

Right up there with patience is the character trait of being unique thinkers.  Often they are not satisfied with doing things the way others ahead of them have done them. They pay no reverence to the status quo.  In fact, “thinking outside the box” is one of their defining trademarks.

Another character trait that many good entrepreneurs seem to have is the ability to embrace defeat or failure, and treat it not as a roadblock but as an opportunity to make some needed course corrections and move forward.

Confidence is typically an in-bred trait that many business owners exhibit.  They are not shy or afraid to “put themselves out there” in a manner that others find intimidating and beyond their comfort zone.

Finally, I believe the best business people are not shy when meeting, greeting, collaborating with, and exchanging ideas with others.  They are not typically introverts and see the act of building relationships with others as a necessary business practice.

I’m sure there are other owner personality traits I have failed to mention, but these are a few that stand out to me as I have watched and worked along side hundreds of very successful small business owners.

To your online business success!
